Allergies and shortness of breath

A blocked nose can feel uncomfortable, but true breathlessness, wheezing, chest tightness, or difficulty speaking is not something to dismiss as simple nasal allergy.

Asthma commonly presents with episodes of wheeze, cough, chest tightness, and breathlessness. Allergens such as dust mites, pollen, mould, or animal dander can trigger symptoms in a person whose airways are sensitive.

Anaphylaxis can present rapidly with breathing difficulty, hoarse voice, throat or tongue swelling, widespread hives, vomiting, dizziness, or collapse. Breathlessness can also arise from heart, lung, blood, or anxiety-related conditions, so timing and accompanying signs matter.

If you have a prescribed reliever inhaler, follow your personal asthma plan. If you have a prescribed adrenaline auto-injector and signs of anaphylaxis, use it as trained and call emergency services; do not wait to see whether an antihistamine settles the breathing problem.

For non-emergency recurring symptoms, note the trigger, onset, wheeze, cough, chest discomfort, medicines used, and response. Avoid the suspected exposure when this can be done safely, and arrange assessment rather than repeatedly treating unexplained breathlessness yourself.

Call emergency services now for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, collapse, inability to speak normally, swelling of the mouth or throat, crushing chest pressure, or symptoms after a known allergen exposure.

Seek prompt medical review for new breathlessness, night waking, reduced exercise tolerance, recurrent wheeze, palpitations, or symptoms that are becoming more frequent. A clinician may check oxygen level, listen to the chest, review medicines, and assess whether airway testing or another investigation is appropriate.

Ask whether the episodes fit asthma, how to recognise worsening symptoms, whether you need a written action plan, and how to use inhalers or an auto-injector correctly. Clarify which exposures should be avoided and whether allergy testing would change management.
