Allergies and itchy eyes

Allergic conjunctivitis often affects both eyes and produces prominent itching, watering, mild redness, and puffy eyelids. Sneezing, a runny or blocked nose, and a clear link with pets, dusty rooms, or outdoor pollen support an allergic pattern. Thick discharge that sticks the eyelids together is less typical of allergy. Eye pain, reduced vision, marked light sensitivity, or intense redness also requires another explanation rather than being assumed to be allergic irritation.

Avoid rubbing because it releases more inflammatory chemicals and can worsen swelling. Apply a clean, cool compress over closed eyelids and use preservative-free lubricating drops if suitable for you. Wash your face and hair after heavy outdoor exposure, keep bedroom textiles clean, and avoid touching the eyes after handling animals. Remove contact lenses until the eyes are comfortable. A pharmacist can advise on anti-allergy eye drops or oral medicines and check whether they suit your age, pregnancy status, contact-lens use, and other treatments.

Seek urgent eye care for pain, a change in vision, severe light sensitivity, an eye injury, chemical exposure, or a very red eye with headache or nausea. Contact-lens wearers should obtain prompt advice for a painful or red eye because corneal infection needs early treatment. Emergency help is needed if eye symptoms occur with throat swelling, breathing difficulty, wheezing, faintness, or rapidly spreading swelling. Arrange routine review when symptoms keep returning, remain one-sided, or do not respond to appropriate allergy care.

Ask which trigger best matches the timing and whether testing would change how you manage exposure. Check how long to use your eye drops, whether they can be used with contact lenses, and whether a nasal treatment could also help accompanying rhinitis. Tell the clinician about eye surgery, glaucoma, dry-eye problems, pregnancy, and every drop or medicine you already use. If one eye behaves differently from the other, make that clear.
