Allergies and eye discharge: what the discharge can tell you

Allergic eye symptoms often involve both eyes and may occur with sneezing or an itchy nose. Discharge that repeatedly seals the eyelids, develops mainly in one eye, or accompanies pain or vision change should not be assumed to be allergy.

Allergic conjunctivitis makes the eye surface inflamed and stimulates tears and mucus. The result is usually clear, watery, or ropy material alongside strong itching. Viral conjunctivitis can also cause watery discharge, while bacterial conjunctivitis may produce thicker yellow or green material.

Appearance provides a clue rather than a diagnosis. Dry eye, a blocked tear pathway, an irritant, a foreign body, or inflammation of the eyelid margins can also alter eye secretions. A clinician considers the discharge together with pain, vision, light sensitivity, redness, and lens use.

Wash your hands, then wipe discharge away gently with clean damp material, moving from the inner corner outward. Use fresh material for each eye. A cool compress can soothe allergy-related itching; avoid rubbing because this can worsen irritation.

Pause contact-lens use while discharge or redness is present. Do not share towels, cosmetics, drops, or lens equipment, and replace eye makeup that may have been contaminated. A pharmacist or clinician can help select suitable allergy drops and check whether they are compatible with your medicines and lenses.

Obtain urgent eye care for any loss or blurring of vision, significant eye pain, marked sensitivity to light, an injury, chemical splash, or a suspected object in the eye. A red, painful, discharging eye in someone who wears contact lenses also needs prompt assessment.

Book a consultation if thick discharge continues, the eyelids become more swollen, symptoms remain mainly on one side, episodes recur, or basic care does not help. Emergency help is needed if the eye problem accompanies difficulty breathing, throat swelling, faintness, or rapidly worsening facial swelling.

Describe the discharge colour and texture, when it collects, whether one or both eyes are involved, and whether itching outweighs pain. Mention recent colds, allergy triggers, sick contacts, new eye products, injuries, and contact-lens habits. Ask what cause fits the full pattern and which drops should be avoided.
