Lubricating drops and cool compresses may settle mild irritation. A pharmacist or clinician may recommend an anti-allergy eye drop when symptoms continue, while severe or unclear cases need an eye examination.

Allergic conjunctivitis is an immune reaction at the eye surface, so treatment differs from care for bacterial or viral conjunctivitis. Prominent itching, watery discharge and symptoms in both eyes can fit an allergic pattern. Thick discharge, significant pain or visual change calls for assessment rather than assuming allergy.

The right option depends on symptom severity, age, pregnancy, contact-lens use, other eye conditions and medicines already being used. Some eye drops should only be used under clinical supervision.

Reduce exposure to the suspected trigger where practical. Clean cool compresses can calm swollen lids, and preservative-free lubricating drops help dilute allergens. Keep dropper tips away from the eye and hands, and follow the product instructions.

Anti-allergy drops may contain an antihistamine or a medicine that limits release of allergy chemicals. Some products combine these actions. Oral antihistamines may help when nasal allergy symptoms occur too, but they can worsen eye dryness in some people. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections, not allergic conjunctivitis.

Stop contact-lens wear during active redness or discomfort. Do not use redness-relief drops repeatedly without advice, and never start steroid eye drops unless an eye-care professional has prescribed and monitored them.

Seek urgent care for reduced vision, severe eye pain, marked sensitivity to light, chemical exposure, injury, or a painful red eye while wearing contact lenses. These symptoms may involve structures deeper than the conjunctiva and should not be managed as a simple allergy.

Arrange a routine appointment when treatment is not controlling symptoms, episodes keep returning, the diagnosis is uncertain, or discharge becomes thick and sticky. Take your eye products and a list of other medicines to the visit.

Ask what type of conjunctivitis your symptoms suggest, how to use each prescribed drop, and whether separate drops need spacing apart. Confirm when contact lenses can be restarted and which changes would require an urgent review.
