Treating an allergic cough at home

Short answer
Home care for a possible allergic cough includes avoiding likely triggers, soothing throat irritation and treating accompanying nasal allergy symptoms safely.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Helpful record
- Timing, location, exposures and accompanying symptoms
- Rinse safety
- Use sterile, distilled, or previously boiled and cooled water
- Avoid
- Smoke, incense and strong fragrances that provoke coughing
What you can do now
Drink fluids, avoid smoke and strongly scented products, and note where and when the cough worsens. Home treatment is suitable only while breathing is comfortable and no warning signs are present.
Clues that allergies may be contributing
An allergy-related cough may accompany sneezing, itchy or watery eyes, clear nasal discharge and an irritated throat. It may flare after dust, pollen, pets or another repeatable exposure. The cough can result from nasal drainage or sensitive airways.
A home observation cannot confirm the cause. Infection may bring fever or body aches, reflux may be linked to meals or lying down, and asthma may produce wheezing, chest tightness or breathlessness.
Safe home-care measures
Limit the suspected exposure without undertaking extreme cleaning. Damp-dust surfaces, wash bedding regularly, change clothes after a dusty outing and keep indoor air free from tobacco smoke and incense. Warm drinks may ease throat irritation, while honey can soothe a cough for adults and children older than infancy.
A saline nasal spray can help clear mucus. For a nasal rinse, use distilled, sterile, or previously boiled and cooled water, and clean the device after use. Before taking an antihistamine or medicated nasal spray, check suitability with a pharmacist, especially for a child, during pregnancy, or when you have other conditions or medicines.
Signs home care is not enough
Book an assessment when coughing keeps returning, disrupts sleep, lasts despite avoiding a suspected trigger, or is accompanied by wheeze, fever, chest discomfort, thick or bloody mucus, or difficulty exercising. A clinician can check for asthma, infection, reflux and other causes.
Call emergency services for struggling or rapidly worsening breathing, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or sudden swelling of the lips, tongue or throat. Do not wait for an allergy medicine to work when these signs appear.
What to discuss at a review
Describe the cough's timing, any nasal or chest symptoms, recent illnesses and suspected exposures. Ask whether allergy testing or lung testing would change management, which medicine is appropriate, and what symptom change should prompt a follow-up.

Questions people ask
Can I use honey for an allergic cough?
Honey may soothe throat irritation in adults and children older than infancy, but it does not treat the allergic inflammation or an asthma flare.
Should I use a humidifier?
Extra humidity can feel soothing in a dry room, but a dirty appliance or overly damp environment can encourage mould and worsen symptoms. Clean the unit as directed and stop if coughing increases.
When should a child with a cough be assessed?
Seek clinical advice if a child's cough persists, interferes with drinking or sleep, or comes with fever, wheezing or laboured breathing. Breathing difficulty requires urgent care.
