Home care for allergic conjunctivitis

How the structures involved in Allergic Conjunctivitis differ from normal

Short answer

Cool compresses, allergen avoidance, gentle eyelid care and suitable lubricating drops can ease allergic conjunctivitis, while rubbing and unadvised homemade eye preparations can make irritation worse.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Simple relief
A cool clean compress can soothe itchy, swollen eyelids.
Safer rinsing
Use a suitable sterile eye product, not a homemade mixture.
Lens advice
Leave contact lenses out while the eyes are red or irritated.

What home care can achieve

An allergen touching the eye surface can trigger itching, watering, redness and puffy eyelids. Self-care reduces exposure and soothes the surface, but it does not identify every trigger or rule out infection, dry eye, a corneal problem or a trapped particle.

Symptoms in both eyes that fluctuate with pollen, dusty rooms, pets or other exposures fit an allergic pattern. Nasal itching and sneezing can occur alongside the eye reaction. Thick discharge, pronounced pain or altered vision does not fit straightforward home management and needs clinical attention.

Safe steps you can try at home

Place a clean, cool compress over closed eyes and replace it when it warms. Wash your hands before touching the eyelids, dab away tears with a fresh tissue, and avoid rubbing. Preservative-free artificial tears may rinse allergens from the surface and reduce the gritty feeling; follow the product directions and avoid touching the nozzle to the eye.

During high-pollen periods, keep windows closed when practical, shower after being outdoors, wash hair before bed and change clothing that has collected pollen. Clean dusty areas with a damp cloth and avoid directing fans at the face. Remove contact lenses until irritation has fully settled and use glasses instead.

Do not put tea, plant extracts, essential oils, honey, salt mixtures or non-sterile water into the eyes. These may irritate or contaminate the surface. A pharmacist can help select an allergy treatment and check whether it is suitable with pregnancy, childhood, glaucoma or other medicines.

When self-care is not enough

Seek urgent assessment for eye pain, reduced vision, marked light sensitivity, chemical exposure, injury, severe swelling, or a red painful eye while using contact lenses. Rinse a chemical splash immediately with plenty of clean running water while arranging urgent help.

See a clinician if symptoms persist despite avoiding triggers and using suitable products, repeatedly disrupt daily life, or produce discharge that becomes thick. Recurring episodes may benefit from a planned prevention approach or assessment for a specific allergen.

Questions about ongoing symptoms

Ask whether your symptom pattern is clearly allergic, which eye drops fit your medical history, and when to start them around a known seasonal trigger. If avoidance is difficult or the trigger remains unclear, discuss whether allergy testing would change the management plan.

Questions people ask

Can I wash allergic eyes with tap water?

You can wash the closed eyelids and face, but products placed directly in the eye should be sterile and intended for eye use. Do not store or reuse homemade rinses.

Does a warm or cool compress work better?

A cool compress generally suits allergy-related itching and puffiness. Use a clean cloth and do not share it, especially when the cause of redness has not been confirmed.

Should I keep using my contact lenses?

No. Remove them while symptoms are active because lenses can trap allergens and a red eye in a lens wearer may require prompt examination. Follow professional advice before restarting wear.
