What should you know about Alexandrite Nd:YAG laser?

A platform may offer both options, but they are not automatically applied together. Alexandrite energy is strongly absorbed by pigment and is often used for pigmented hair. Nd:YAG energy reaches deeper and interacts less with surface pigment, which can make it useful when protecting melanin-rich skin is a central consideration. Neither mode removes the need for an individual skin assessment and suitable eye protection.

For hair reduction, laser energy heats pigment in the hair and surrounding follicle. Hair colour, thickness, depth, growth cycle, and contrast with the skin influence the response. Very light, grey, white, or red hair contains less of the pigment these lasers target and may respond poorly. Several visits may be planned because not every follicle is in a responsive growth stage at the same time.

Nd:YAG lasers also have uses beyond hair reduction, including selected vascular concerns and some nail-fungus treatment plans. The diagnosis, device settings, and expected outcome differ for each use, so one indication should not be treated as proof that the same approach suits another.

Before the visit, disclose recent sun or tanning exposure, medicines and supplements, light-sensitive reactions, active infection, cold sores near the area, previous pigment changes, and a tendency to raised scars. Do not wax, thread, or pluck hair being treated unless the clinic says otherwise. The practitioner may inspect the area and use a test spot before choosing the mode, pulse pattern, energy, cooling, and visit interval.

Following treatment, cool the skin as directed, use mild products, and apply sun protection to exposed areas. Avoid picking crusts or irritated follicles. Delay strenuous activity, hot environments, swimming, exfoliants, and fragranced products while heat or sensitivity persists, following the specific instructions you receive.

Brief warmth, redness, or swelling around hair follicles can follow laser exposure. Call the clinic if these reactions intensify instead of settling, or if there is blistering, significant swelling, worsening pain, discharge, spreading redness, an open wound, or a pronounced colour change. Obtain urgent help for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or throat, collapse, or widespread hives.

Ask which laser mode is proposed and why it fits your skin and target. Find out who operates the device, whether a test spot is advisable, how the eyes and surrounding skin will be protected, what result is realistic, and how the clinician will adjust the plan if the response is weak or irritation develops. For nail concerns, ask how the diagnosis was confirmed and whether medicine or nail care is also needed.
