What should you know about Alex Nd:YAG laser?

“Alex” commonly refers to an alexandrite laser, while Nd:YAG is a different laser technology. A platform that contains both lets the clinician select a mode rather than treating the names as interchangeable. Nd:YAG energy reaches the target differently and may be considered when the skin contains more melanin; the suitable choice still depends on an in-person assessment. For hair removal, laser energy is intended to heat pigment associated with the hair follicle. Grey, white, very light, or fine hair may respond poorly because it provides less pigment to target.

Tell the clinician about recent tanning, medicines that increase light sensitivity, active rashes, previous pigment changes, cold sores near the treatment area, and any tendency to form raised scars. Avoid waxing, threading, or plucking hair before a hair-removal course because the follicle target needs to remain present; follow the clinic’s instructions on shaving instead. Arrive with clean skin and no fragrance, deodorant, or cosmetic product over the site if directed.

After treatment, use gentle cleansing, avoid rubbing or picking, and apply the recommended moisturiser or cooling measure. Protect exposed skin from strong sun and follow the clinician’s guidance about exercise, hot showers, saunas, and active skincare while the area feels warm or irritated.

Temporary warmth, redness, or small bumps around treated hairs can occur. Contact the treating clinic promptly if pain is increasing rather than settling, or if you develop blistering, broken skin, marked swelling, spreading redness, discharge, or a new light or dark patch. Seek urgent medical care for facial or throat swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Do not pop blisters or apply bleaching agents to an injured area while awaiting advice.

Ask which laser mode will be used, why it suits your current skin tone and target, whether a test spot is appropriate, and what eye protection and skin cooling will be provided. Confirm who will operate the device, which products and activities to avoid afterward, what response is expected, and how to contact the clinic if the skin changes. If the goal is nail fungus rather than hair removal, ask how the diagnosis was confirmed and what other treatment options may be needed.
