Is Aldactone a diuretic?

Its generic name is spironolactone. Clinicians use its fluid and hormone-related effects for several conditions, and dermatologists may use its anti-androgen action for selected skin or hair concerns. The reason for treatment determines the dosing and follow-up plan.

Spironolactone blocks the action of aldosterone in the kidneys. This changes how the body handles sodium, water and potassium. You may pass urine more often after a dose, although the timing and intensity vary with the regimen, hydration and reason it was prescribed.

Potassium-sparing does not mean potassium cannot rise too high. Kidney impairment, dehydration, potassium supplements and certain interacting medicines can increase that risk. Blood pressure can also fall as fluid balance changes.

Follow the prescription label and agree on practical dose timing with the clinician if increased urination disrupts sleep or travel. Never take an extra tablet to replace a forgotten one unless the prescriber or pharmacist specifically instructs you to do so.

Share a complete list of medicines, supplements and salt substitutes. Mention kidney or adrenal disease, low blood pressure, pregnancy or pregnancy plans. Complete any requested blood tests, which may assess potassium and kidney function, and follow individual fluid advice rather than deliberately overdrinking or restricting fluids.

Request prompt medical advice for persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, pronounced thirst with weakness, very little urine, troublesome dizziness, muscle weakness, cramps, tingling or an unusual heartbeat. These symptoms merit assessment because fluid balance, kidney function, blood pressure or potassium may have changed.

Call emergency services for collapse, severe difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, chest pain, severe confusion or a sustained irregular heartbeat. Move to a safe seated or lying position if you become faint.
