Aldactone is a brand of spironolactone. The medicine reduces the effect of androgens on susceptible hair follicles; it does not stimulate every type of hair loss in the same way. A dermatologist first considers the pattern, medical history, current medicines and possible causes of shedding.

The dose printed on a tablet is not a promise of benefit or a universal starting point. A prescriber selects and adjusts the regimen according to response, side effects, blood pressure, kidney function, potassium balance and other medicines. Hair changes develop gradually because follicles move through growth cycles; early photographs taken under similar lighting can make follow-up more useful.

Spironolactone is more relevant when androgen activity contributes to patterned thinning. Sudden shedding, patchy bald areas, scalp inflammation, nutritional problems and thyroid disorders may need a different investigation or treatment.

Take it exactly as prescribed and do not double a missed dose. Tell the prescriber about kidney or adrenal problems, low blood pressure, pregnancy plans, supplements, salt substitutes and all prescription or non-prescription medicines. Potassium-containing products and medicines that affect the kidneys or blood pressure can change the safety plan.

Attend requested blood pressure checks and blood tests. Discuss reliable pregnancy prevention when pregnancy is possible, because spironolactone is generally avoided during pregnancy. Changes in urination, dizziness, breast tenderness or menstrual pattern are worth recording and raising at follow-up rather than changing the dose yourself.

Contact the prescribing clinic promptly for troublesome dizziness, faintness, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, marked weakness, muscle cramps, an unusual heartbeat, or much less urine than expected. These features can accompany low blood pressure, dehydration, kidney problems or disturbed potassium levels.

Seek emergency help for fainting, severe breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, chest pain, or a sustained irregular heartbeat. If pregnancy occurs or is suspected, stop and contact the prescriber promptly for individual instructions.

Ask which hair-loss pattern the clinician sees, whether blood tests or scalp examination are needed, how improvement will be judged, and when follow-up should occur. Also confirm what to do during an illness that causes dehydration and which medicines or supplements should be avoided.
