Alcohol for swimmer's ear: what to know

These drops can help leftover water evaporate from the outer ear canal. They are unsuitable if you have ear pain, discharge, ear tubes, a known or possible eardrum hole, or recent ear surgery.

Swimmer's ear, also called otitis externa, affects the skin of the outer ear canal. Moisture can soften this skin and reduce its natural protection. An alcohol-containing drying product may remove retained moisture after swimming, but it does not replace prescribed treatment once the canal is inflamed or infected.

Putting alcohol into sore or broken skin can cause marked stinging and irritation. If the eardrum is not intact, fluid placed in the canal may reach structures beyond the outer ear, so the ear should be examined before any non-prescribed drops are used.

If your ear feels normal and you want to prevent future episodes, ask a clinician or pharmacist whether a purpose-made ear-drying product suits you. After swimming, tilt the affected ear downward, let water drain, and dry only the outside with a clean towel.

Do not insert cotton buds, fingers, or other objects into the canal, and do not mix a home remedy for an ear that is painful or leaking. For suspected swimmer's ear, keep the ear dry and arrange an assessment; treatment may include medicated drops selected for the condition of the canal and eardrum.

Seek prompt care for increasing ear pain, fluid or pus from the ear, swelling around the opening, fever, or reduced hearing. Assessment is also sensible if symptoms began after using alcohol or another ear product.

Get urgent medical help if redness or swelling spreads beyond the ear canal, pain is severe, you feel very unwell, or you have diabetes or a weakened immune system alongside ear symptoms. Sudden major hearing loss, severe dizziness, or facial weakness also needs urgent assessment.

Ask whether the eardrum looks intact, whether the canal needs cleaning, and which drops are appropriate. If episodes return after swimming, ask about ear protection, drying methods, skin conditions in the canal, and when prevention drops can be used safely.
