Can alcohol cause shortness of breath?

Possible pathways include an alcohol-triggered asthma flare, an allergic reaction to an ingredient, reflux irritating the airways, or a fast or irregular heartbeat. Intoxication can also make it harder to recognise that breathing is becoming dangerous.

Breathlessness that begins soon after a particular drink, especially with wheezing, flushing, hives, or swelling, may reflect sensitivity or an allergic reaction. Anaphylaxis can present with breathing difficulty and swelling and requires emergency help.

Symptoms with chest pressure, palpitations, fever, cough, or breathlessness during ordinary activity may point to a heart, lung, or blood problem rather than alcohol alone. Asthma, angina, atrial fibrillation, anaemia, and chest infections can all present with shortness of breath.

Stop drinking alcohol, sit upright, loosen tight clothing, and move away from smoke or strong fumes. If you have a prescribed reliever inhaler and a clinician has told you how to use it, follow that plan.

Do not drive yourself if you feel breathless, faint, confused, or intoxicated. Note which drink you had, when symptoms began, whether wheezing or a rash appeared, and any medicines taken; these details can help a clinician identify a trigger.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak comfortably, collapse, confusion, chest pressure, swelling of the lips or tongue, or widespread hives with breathing difficulty.

Arrange a prompt medical review if episodes recur after alcohol, wake you from sleep, occur with palpitations, or limit normal activity. Avoid the suspected drink until the cause has been assessed.

Ask whether the pattern fits asthma, an ingredient reaction, reflux, a heart rhythm problem, or another cause, and whether you need breathing tests, an examination, or an allergy assessment. Bring the drink label or ingredient list if one product repeatedly triggers symptoms.
