Alcohol and body aches

The pattern matters: note where it hurts, whether muscles are tender or weak, what other symptoms are present and whether the aches settle after rest and hydration. Alcohol timing alone does not identify the cause.

Alcohol increases urine production and may leave you dehydrated, especially with vomiting or poor fluid intake. It also fragments sleep and can lead to awkward sleeping positions or reduced awareness of an injury. These effects can produce diffuse soreness the next day.

Fever, cough, rash, diarrhoea or recent travel points away from a simple hangover and towards an infection or another condition. Persistent widespread pain, pronounced fatigue, cold intolerance or ongoing weakness also merits assessment rather than repeated self-treatment.

Stop drinking for the time being, sip fluids, eat if you can and rest in a comfortable position. Gentle movement can help stiffness, but avoid strenuous exercise while dehydrated or dizzy. Check with a pharmacist before taking a pain reliever because alcohol, liver disease, stomach irritation, kidney problems and other medicines can change what is suitable.

Keep track of drink intake, pain location, urine colour and accompanying symptoms. If daily heavy drinking is part of the picture, seek professional help before stopping suddenly, particularly if previous attempts caused shaking, sweating, hallucinations or seizures.

Get urgent care for severe muscle pain with marked weakness, swelling or dark brown urine, as this can signal significant muscle breakdown. Emergency help is also needed for confusion, collapse, breathing difficulty, chest pain, a seizure, a stiff neck with fever or inability to keep fluids down.

Book a clinical review when aches repeatedly follow small amounts of alcohol, continue beyond the expected recovery period, disturb daily activity or occur with weight change, persistent fever, joint swelling or progressive weakness.

Describe the exact pain pattern and ask whether examination or tests for muscle, thyroid, liver, kidney or infection-related problems are appropriate. Mention recent travel, exercise, injuries, new medicines and any difficulty controlling alcohol intake.
