Alcohol and snoring

Short answer
Alcohol can make snoring louder by relaxing throat muscles and narrowing the sleeping airway.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main effect
- Alcohol relaxes tissues surrounding the upper airway
- Useful comparison
- Notice the pattern on alcohol-free nights
- Key warning
- Witnessed pauses, gasping, or marked daytime sleepiness
The short answer
Drinking near bedtime can also make it harder for the body to respond normally when breathing becomes restricted. Someone who rarely snores may start after drinking, while established snoring may become more frequent or disruptive.
Why breathing becomes noisy
Snoring is the sound of relaxed tissues vibrating as air moves through a narrowed upper airway. Alcohol reduces muscle tone around that airway. Nasal blockage from allergic rhinitis or chronic sinusitis may further encourage mouth breathing and turbulence.
Obstructive sleep apnoea commonly presents with loud snoring, repeated pauses in breathing, gasping or choking during sleep, and daytime sleepiness. Snoring alone does not establish the diagnosis, but witnessed pauses or pronounced daytime symptoms warrant assessment.
Changes to try
Avoid alcohol near bedtime and compare sleep on alcohol-free nights. Sleeping on your side may reduce airway narrowing for some people. Treat persistent nasal congestion with advice from a pharmacist or clinician rather than relying on decongestant sprays for prolonged periods.
A household member can note pauses, choking, restless sleep, and whether the pattern changes after drinking. Do not use alcohol as a sleep aid: it may make you feel sleepy initially while fragmenting sleep later. If weight contributes to airway narrowing, discuss a sustainable weight-management approach suited to your health.
When snoring needs medical review
Arrange an appointment if another person witnesses breathing pauses, gasping, or choking, or if you wake with headaches, feel persistently unrefreshed, struggle with concentration, or become very sleepy during the day. These features can accompany obstructive sleep apnoea and may lead to a sleep assessment.
Do not drive if you are fighting sleep. Seek urgent help if someone is difficult to wake, has blue or grey lips, has persistent breathing difficulty while awake, or may have severe alcohol poisoning.
Information for your appointment
Share when the snoring began, whether alcohol changes it, your usual sleep position, nasal symptoms, morning headaches, and daytime alertness. Mention sedatives, sleeping tablets, opioid pain medicines, and other substances because combinations that suppress alertness can affect overnight breathing. A partner's observations can be especially useful.

Questions people ask
Will avoiding alcohol stop snoring?
It may reduce alcohol-related worsening, but snoring can also reflect nasal blockage, sleep position, airway anatomy, or obstructive sleep apnoea.
Is loud snoring the same as sleep apnoea?
No. Obstructive sleep apnoea often includes loud snoring, but diagnosis depends on the broader breathing pattern and, when indicated, a sleep assessment.
