Alcohol and hypertension

The effect varies with the amount, drinking pattern, medicines, and other health conditions. Reducing or avoiding alcohol may support steadier readings, but it does not replace prescribed hypertension treatment.

Alcohol can temporarily change blood-vessel tone, heart rate, fluid balance, and nervous-system activity. Repeated heavy intake can contribute to persistently raised blood pressure. Alcoholic drinks can also add energy intake and disrupt sleep, both of which may make blood-pressure control more difficult.

Some blood-pressure medicines can cause dizziness or drowsiness, and alcohol may intensify these effects. Do not skip, double, or change a dose to accommodate drinking; a clinician or pharmacist can check the specific medicine.

Keep a brief record of drinks, home blood-pressure readings, medicine doses, sleep, and symptoms. Measure while seated and rested, using the same validated monitor and a correctly fitting cuff, so the pattern is easier to interpret.

If you plan to cut down, choose alcohol-free days and replace the usual drink with a non-alcoholic option. Anyone who drinks heavily or develops shaking, sweating, agitation, nausea, or anxiety when alcohol wears off should seek medical help before stopping suddenly because withdrawal can be dangerous.

Arrange a routine review if readings remain above the target agreed with your clinician, fluctuate after drinking, or side effects make it hard to take medicine consistently.

Call emergency services for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, sudden weakness or numbness on one side, difficulty speaking, a sudden severe headache, new confusion, or sudden loss of vision. These symptoms need urgent assessment regardless of the blood-pressure reading or alcohol intake.

Ask whether alcohol may interact with each prescribed medicine, what home-reading target applies to you, and how often to check it. Mention sleep problems, snoring, kidney disease, swelling, chest symptoms, and any difficulty reducing alcohol, as these details can change the care plan.
