Albumin in urinalysis: understanding the finding

Short answer

Albumin in urine can indicate temporary strain or persistent leakage through the kidneys, so an unexpected finding often needs confirmation and clinical context.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Normal kidney role
Keeps most albumin in the bloodstream
One positive sample
May be temporary and often needs confirmation
Follow-up context
Includes blood pressure, blood tests, and symptoms

What the finding tells you

Healthy kidney filters generally keep this blood protein in the circulation. A dipstick may report protein rather than albumin specifically, while a laboratory ratio can compare urine albumin with creatinine to account for urine concentration.

Temporary and persistent causes

Fever, strenuous exercise, dehydration, a urinary infection, or contamination during collection can produce a temporary positive result. Persistent albumin leakage may reflect damage to the kidney filters and can occur with conditions that affect blood vessels or kidney tissue.

A single result does not show whether leakage will continue or establish its cause. Blood pressure, kidney blood tests, urine microscopy, symptoms, pregnancy status, and repeat samples help shape the interpretation.

How to follow up

Discuss the report with the ordering clinician. If repeat testing is advised, use the collection method provided, avoid collecting during menstrual bleeding when possible, and tell the clinician about recent fever, vigorous activity, urinary symptoms, and current medicines.

Do not self-treat a positive urine test with leftover antibiotics. Burning urination or urgency may need a urine culture, because protein alone neither confirms a bacterial infection nor identifies the appropriate treatment.

When medical attention is needed

Arrange timely assessment for visible blood in urine, persistent foamy urine, swelling around the eyes or ankles, fever with urinary symptoms, pain in the side or back, or a noticeable fall in urine output.

Seek urgent care if you cannot pass urine, become confused or very drowsy, have severe breathlessness, or develop rapidly increasing swelling. During pregnancy, promptly report a positive protein result with severe headache, visual disturbance, upper abdominal pain, or sudden swelling.

What to clarify with your clinician

Ask whether the test measured albumin specifically, whether the sample should be repeated, how your kidney blood tests and blood pressure compare, and what symptoms should change the timing of follow-up.

Questions people ask

Can exercise cause albumin in urine?

Strenuous activity can temporarily increase urinary protein. Tell the clinician when you exercised so they can decide when and how to repeat the sample.

Does albumin in urine mean kidney failure?

No. It can be temporary, and persistent leakage can appear at different stages of kidney disease. Kidney function blood tests and repeat urine measurements provide essential context.

Can a urinary infection affect the result?

Yes. Infection and inflammation in the urinary tract can cause protein to appear, particularly when there are white blood cells or blood in the sample.
