Albumin blood test: what the result can mean

A result outside the laboratory range does not identify one disease by itself. Your clinician interprets it alongside symptoms, medicines, other blood results, urine findings, and changes over time.

Low albumin can occur when the liver makes less protein, the kidneys or gut lose protein, inflammation changes protein production, or food intake and absorption are inadequate. Dilution from excess body fluid can also lower the measured concentration.

High albumin is less commonly a sign of excess production. It often reflects concentrated blood from fluid loss. The reference range can differ between laboratories, so compare the value with the range printed on your own report.

Review the result with the clinician who requested it, especially if it is newly abnormal or has changed. They may check liver enzymes, kidney function, urine protein, inflammation markers, or repeat the sample when hydration is stable.

Do not start protein supplements solely because albumin is low. Treatment depends on the cause, and changing supplements or prescribed medicines without guidance can obscure the clinical picture.

Arrange prompt medical assessment if an abnormal result accompanies increasing swelling of the legs or abdomen, reduced urine, persistent vomiting or diarrhoea, yellow skin or eyes, or marked weakness.

Seek urgent care for confusion, difficulty breathing, fainting, vomiting blood, black tar-like stool, or rapidly worsening swelling. These symptoms require assessment regardless of the albumin value.

Ask whether the change is mild or substantial for that laboratory, whether previous results show a trend, which other tests clarify the cause, and whether any medicine or current illness could affect interpretation.
