Airborne rabies: what counts as an exposure

Being near an animal, touching intact skin or sharing ordinary air does not by itself describe a typical rabies exposure. Unusual aerosol concerns are assessed in specialised settings rather than assumed from routine contact.

A bite, a scratch contaminated with saliva, or saliva contacting an open wound or mucous membrane needs prompt assessment. Bat encounters deserve particular care because a small bite or scratch may be difficult to see or recall.

Risk assessment considers the animal species, its behaviour and health, where the contact occurred, whether the animal can be observed or tested, the exact body site, wound depth, and any previous rabies vaccination. Symptoms are not used as a reason to wait before seeking preventive care.

Wash bites and scratches immediately and thoroughly with soap and running water, then apply an available antiseptic. Seek urgent medical assessment the same day. Do not seal or tightly cover the wound before it is examined unless this is needed to control bleeding.

Give the clinician details about the animal, location, time, type of contact and your vaccination history. Do not attempt to catch an unfamiliar or wild animal yourself. Local authorities or trained animal services can advise on safe observation or testing.

Urgent assessment is needed after a bite or scratch from a potentially infected mammal, saliva contact with broken skin or the eyes, nose or mouth, or a bat encounter where direct contact cannot be ruled out.

Rabies prevention is most effective when started before illness develops, so do not wait for the animal to become ill or for your wound to cause symptoms. A healthcare professional will decide whether wound care, rabies vaccine and rabies immunoglobulin are indicated.
