AHD hair transplant: clarify the method before treatment

A branded abbreviation cannot tell you whether follicles are removed individually or as a strip, how recipient sites are created, or who performs each surgical step. Those details matter more than the label.

A hair transplant moves follicles from a donor area, commonly the back or sides of the scalp, into areas of thinning. It redistributes existing hair rather than creating new follicles, and donor supply limits what can be placed.

Suitability depends on the diagnosis, stability and pattern of loss, scalp health, hair characteristics, donor density, and expectations. Pattern hair loss may continue in untreated native hair after surgery. Bald patches caused by active inflammation or scarring need diagnosis before transplantation is considered.

Have a face-to-face medical assessment that includes the scalp and donor zone. Ask for the exact diagnosis, the named extraction method, the expected graft distribution, who performs incisions and harvesting, and how the design accounts for future hair loss.

Share medicines, supplements, smoking or nicotine use, bleeding problems, allergies, previous scalp procedures, and any tendency to raised scars. Follow written instructions on washing, activity, wound care, and prescribed medicines. Avoid choosing a plan based only on a dense-looking hairline photograph.

Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, fainting, chest pain, uncontrolled bleeding, or rapidly increasing facial or throat swelling. Contact the surgical team promptly about fever, pus, worsening redness, severe pain, blackened skin, or swelling that is increasing rather than settling.

Arrange reassessment if shedding or patchiness extends beyond what was explained, the donor area heals poorly, or the planned hairline and density remain unclear. Early review allows the clinician to examine the scalp rather than judge a complication from photographs alone.

Ask what AHD means at that clinic, which parts the licensed surgeon performs, and what happens if donor supply is limited. Clarify scarring, temporary shedding, numbness, infection, uneven growth, further loss, follow-up access, and alternatives such as medical treatment, scalp micropigmentation, or no procedure.
