Age Spot Treatment: Options, Safety, and Aftercare

Age spots, or solar lentigines, contain extra melanin in sun-exposed skin. Treatment may gradually reduce pigment production, lift pigmented surface cells, target melanin with controlled energy, or remove a selected lesion by freezing. None of these approaches prevents ultraviolet exposure from creating additional colour changes.

Diagnosis comes before treatment because flat brown patches are not all the same. A dermatologist may inspect the border and pigment pattern with magnification. A suspicious or uncertain mark may need sampling rather than cosmetic lightening.

Use consistent broad-spectrum sunscreen and protective clothing throughout treatment. For topical care, follow directions and stop if marked irritation develops. Do not layer multiple acids or lightening agents in an attempt to speed the result, because inflammation can leave darker or lighter patches.

Procedures such as a chemical peel, IPL, pigment-targeted laser, or cryotherapy have different recovery patterns and suitability. Selection depends on skin tone, the number and location of spots, recent sun exposure, scarring history, medicines, and tolerance for temporary redness or crusting. A patch test may be considered for pigment-prone skin.

Seek assessment before treatment if a mark is enlarging, asymmetrical, irregularly bordered, multicoloured, raised, scaly, tender, itchy, crusting, or bleeding. After a procedure, contact the treating clinician for worsening pain, spreading redness, pus, pronounced swelling, or blistering. These symptoms require evaluation rather than another application of the treatment.

Ask how the mark was identified, why the proposed method suits your skin tone, and what changes to expect while it heals. Clarify which skincare products to pause, how to protect the area, and what signs require a call. Mention previous keloids, pigment changes, active rashes, cold sores, and medicines that affect healing or light sensitivity.
