Is there an age limit for a DEXA scan?

Short answer
A DEXA scan has no universal upper or lower age limit; clinicians recommend it when the result can meaningfully guide bone-health care.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Upper limit
- There is no universal maximum age for DEXA.
- Lower limit
- Younger people may be tested for a specific clinical reason.
- Main test question
- The result should be capable of changing care or monitoring.
The short answer
Age affects how results are interpreted and when routine assessment may be considered, but an individual's fracture history, conditions, medicines, and goals determine whether scanning is useful.
What the absence of an age limit means
DEXA measures bone mineral density, commonly at the hip and lower spine. Younger people can be tested when there is a strong clinical reason, such as premature ovarian insufficiency, a bone-weakening medical condition, certain long-term medicines, or an unexpected low-impact fracture.
Older age alone does not make a person ineligible. The practical question is whether the patient can position safely for the scan and whether the finding would alter treatment, monitoring, or fall-prevention plans. Previous joint replacements, spinal changes, or difficulty lying flat may affect which body area can be measured or how a result is interpreted.
Decide whether scanning would help
Review the purpose of testing with a clinician before arranging it. Share details of fractures, falls, loss of height, menopause or ovarian function when relevant, family history, long-term medicines, and conditions affecting digestion, hormones, kidneys, or inflammation.
If you have an earlier DEXA result, bring the report and, if possible, use the same facility for comparison. Repeat scans are most useful when enough time has passed for a meaningful change and when the result could influence management; they are not automatically needed at every check-up.
When care matters more than scheduling DEXA
DEXA itself is not an emergency test. Obtain prompt assessment after a fall when there is severe pain, inability to stand or bear weight, visible deformity, new numbness or weakness, or sudden severe back pain. An ordinary X-ray or other imaging may be needed to look for an acute fracture.
Arrange a non-emergency bone-health review after a fracture from minor trauma, noticeable loss of height, or increasing stoop. The clinician can determine whether DEXA, other imaging, blood tests, or a combination is appropriate.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what decision the scan will inform, whether your mobility or previous surgery changes the scanning plan, how results will be compared with any earlier test, and what alternatives exist if standard positioning is difficult. Clarify whether medicines or supplements need review alongside the scan.

Questions people ask
Can someone be too old for a DEXA scan?
There is no fixed maximum age. A clinician considers whether positioning is safe, whether the result can be interpreted usefully, and whether it would change the person's care.
Can children or young adults have DEXA?
They can when a specialist identifies a clinical reason. Interpretation differs from routine adult assessment and should account for growth, body size, and the underlying condition.
Is repeat DEXA needed simply because I am older?
Not necessarily. The interval depends on the earlier result, ongoing risk factors, treatment, and whether a new measurement would affect management.
