What to Expect After a Tetanus Shot

The immune system is responding to the vaccine, and the injection itself can irritate the arm muscle. Local tenderness may be more noticeable when lifting the arm. A small firm area at the injection site can linger after the other symptoms improve.

The shot prevents tetanus but does not clean or treat a wound. Cuts, punctures, bites, burns, and wounds contaminated with soil still need prompt cleaning and may need separate medical care.

Move the arm gently rather than keeping it completely still. A cool, clean compress can ease soreness, and drinking fluids may help if you feel feverish. If you want pain relief, check with a pharmacist or clinician which medicine is suitable for your age, pregnancy status, health conditions, and other medicines.

Wash an associated wound with clean running water, remove visible loose dirt if this can be done safely, and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not rely on the vaccination alone if the wound is deep, dirty, crushed, or difficult to clean.

Call emergency services for difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, collapse, or severe weakness after vaccination. Seek medical advice if redness or swelling keeps expanding, pain becomes intense, fever is high or persistent, or symptoms are getting worse rather than easing.

Have the wound assessed promptly if it contains a foreign object, will not stop bleeding, develops spreading redness or pus, or if you are uncertain whether your vaccine course is complete. Jaw stiffness or painful muscle spasms require emergency assessment.

Ask whether the vaccine given completes your current course, when another dose may be due, and whether the wound needs additional treatment. Mention any previous serious vaccine reaction and bring an immunisation record if available.
