Itching and Burning After a Period

Short answer
Itching and burning after a period can follow moisture, friction, or contact irritation, but discharge, sores, urinary symptoms, or persistent discomfort need clinical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common irritants
- Fragrance, wipes, detergent residue, dampness, and rubbing
- Safe cleansing
- Wash the outer skin gently; do not wash inside the vagina
- Diagnosis
- Timing after menstruation does not establish the cause
The short answer
Pads, liners, wipes, detergent residue, fragranced products, sweat, and prolonged dampness can irritate vulvar skin. Yeast infection and other vaginal, urinary, or skin conditions may cause overlapping symptoms, so timing alone does not identify the cause.
Details that help distinguish the cause
Notice whether discomfort is on the outer skin, at the vaginal opening, deeper inside, or mainly during urination. Also note rash, swelling, cracks, blisters, ulcers, unusual discharge or odour, pelvic pain, recent antibiotics, sexual exposure, and any change in menstrual products.
Contact dermatitis can present with itching, burning, redness, and raw skin where a product touches. Cutaneous candidiasis can present with a moist, sore rash in folds, while vaginal yeast symptoms require a gynaecological assessment when the diagnosis is uncertain. Several conditions can coexist, and repeated self-treatment may further irritate the area.
Steps that may calm external irritation
Stop newly introduced or fragranced pads, liners, washes, wipes, deodorants, and bubble baths. Rinse the outer vulva gently with lukewarm water, avoid washing inside the vagina, pat dry, and choose loose breathable underwear. Change out of damp clothing and avoid scratching, shaving, or applying antiseptics to sore skin.
Do not start an antifungal, steroid, antibiotic, or home remedy solely from symptom timing, particularly if this is a first episode or the pattern is different from a previously confirmed condition. A clinician may need to inspect the skin and, depending on associated symptoms, check vaginal fluid, urine, or sexual health concerns.
When to seek medical care
Book an examination when discomfort persists, returns after periods, disrupts sleep, or accompanies a new rash, skin thickening, colour change, painful urination, unusual discharge, odour, bleeding outside the expected period, sores, or pain during sex. Seek sexual health advice if symptoms follow a new exposure or a partner has symptoms.
Obtain urgent care for severe or rapidly worsening pain, fever with pelvic pain, difficulty passing urine, extensive blistering, facial swelling, trouble breathing, or feeling faint. Pregnancy, immune suppression, or poorly controlled diabetes lowers the threshold for prompt clinical advice when genital symptoms appear.
What to discuss at the appointment
Describe the exact location and menstrual timing, products used, discharge changes, urinary symptoms, medicines, previous diagnoses, and treatments already tried. Ask whether the skin suggests contact irritation or another dermatosis, whether testing is useful, which bland barrier is suitable, and how to prevent recurrence without disturbing normal vaginal tissue.

Questions people ask
Could my period pad be causing the irritation?
A pad can irritate through fragrance, adhesive, heat, moisture, or friction. The pattern may improve after switching to an unscented option, but persistent symptoms still need assessment.
Should I use thrush treatment straight away?
Not when the diagnosis is uncertain. Irritation and several infections can feel similar, and an unnecessary product may worsen burning or delay the correct treatment.
Is vaginal washing helpful?
No internal washing is needed. Douching and scented cleansers can disturb and irritate vaginal tissue; clean only the external area gently.
