Constipation after a normal delivery

Short answer
Constipation after a normal delivery can follow reduced movement, low fluid intake, pain, medicines, haemorrhoids, or fear of straining around stitches.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Possible contributors
- Dehydration, reduced activity, medicines, pain, haemorrhoids, and delaying the urge
- First measures
- Fluids, gradual dietary fibre, gentle walking, and unhurried toilet posture
- Medication check
- Ask about a suitable stool softener or laxative and prescribed medicine alternatives
The short answer
Stools may be hard, difficult to pass, or less frequent than is normal for you. Early attention can reduce discomfort and the need to strain.
Why bowel habits can change
Labour, changes in eating and drinking, limited mobility, and disrupted routines can slow bowel movement. Some pain medicines and iron supplements may contribute. Swollen haemorrhoids, a tender perineum, or stitches can make you delay going to the toilet, which allows stool to become drier.
A bowel movement does not normally open properly repaired stitches. Even so, pain, a feeling of blockage, leakage of stool, or loss of bowel control should be discussed with your maternity team because examination may be needed.
Steps that may make passing stool easier
Drink regularly and add vegetables, fruit, pulses, and wholegrain foods gradually. Walk gently as recovery allows. Go when you feel the urge, give yourself privacy and time, and avoid prolonged pushing. With your feet supported on a low stool, leaning forward may put the body in a more comfortable position.
If the perineum feels vulnerable, supporting it with a clean pad while opening your bowels may feel reassuring. A clinician or pharmacist can recommend a stool softener or gentle laxative that fits your medicines, health conditions, and feeding plans. Do not stop prescribed iron or pain medicine without discussing an alternative.
Symptoms that need assessment
Contact your clinician if constipation is not easing with self-care, pain is increasing, you repeatedly cannot pass stool, or you notice stool leakage or reduced bowel control. Report rectal bleeding, particularly when it is more than a small streak or you are unsure whether blood comes from the rectum or vagina.
Seek urgent medical help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, inability to pass gas, faintness, fever, or heavy vaginal bleeding. These features should not be assumed to come from ordinary constipation after birth.
What to ask at follow-up
Ask whether any current medicine could be slowing your bowel, which laxative is appropriate while breastfeeding, and how long to use it. Mention tears, stitches, haemorrhoids, pelvic pressure, or bowel leakage so the clinician can tailor care. Also clarify when persistent symptoms should trigger an examination rather than another change in diet.

Questions people ask
Will opening my bowels damage my stitches?
A bowel movement does not normally disrupt a properly repaired tear. Avoid forceful straining, support the area with a clean pad if comfortable, and report worsening wound pain or separation.
Can I take a laxative while breastfeeding?
Several options may be compatible with breastfeeding, but the right product depends on your symptoms, medicines, and health history. Ask a clinician or pharmacist to select one and explain how to use it.
Could iron tablets be contributing?
Iron can make stools harder for some people. Keep taking prescribed treatment until you have discussed whether the formulation, timing, or bowel-care plan should change.
