When is your next period after miscarriage?

Short answer
Your next period comes after pregnancy hormones fall and ovulation resumes, so its timing differs from person to person.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- First bleed
- Miscarriage bleeding and the next menstrual period are separate events.
- Pregnancy possibility
- Conception may occur before menstruation returns.
- Helpful details
- Record when bleeding stops, restarts, and changes in character.
Recognising your next period
The bleeding during and just after miscarriage is not counted as the next menstrual period. The first true period usually looks more like menstrual bleeding after the loss-related bleeding has stopped, although its flow, cramps, and length may differ from your previous pattern.
Why the date can be hard to predict
The body must clear pregnancy hormone before the usual ovulation cycle becomes established. Timing may also reflect how far the pregnancy progressed, whether tissue remains, and whether the miscarriage completed naturally or with medical or surgical care.
Because ovulation precedes menstruation, conception can happen before the first period. A delayed bleed may therefore reflect slower cycle recovery or a new pregnancy; symptoms alone cannot reliably separate the two.
Track recovery and testing
Mark when miscarriage bleeding ends and record any later bleeding, cramps, discharge, and pregnancy-test results. Follow the testing instructions from your care team, since a test can remain positive while pregnancy hormone is still clearing.
If you have sex before menstruation returns, use contraception unless you want another pregnancy. Contact your clinician when there is no clear period after the interval they advised, or if bleeding continues without a distinct break, so they can decide whether examination, blood tests, or imaging are appropriate.
Bleeding and pain that need urgent care
Seek urgent assessment for bleeding that rapidly saturates pads, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, pronounced dizziness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, unpleasant-smelling discharge, or feeling seriously unwell. These symptoms should not be treated as simply an early or unusual period.
What to clarify with your clinician
Ask when they expect you to test again, what result confirms recovery, and which bleeding changes should prompt contact. Mention your usual cycle length, the date loss-related bleeding stopped, contraception, unprotected sex, breastfeeding, and any previous irregular periods because these details guide interpretation.

Questions people ask
Could my first period be different from usual?
Yes. Flow, cramping, and duration can temporarily differ while the menstrual cycle re-establishes.
Does a late period mean something is wrong?
Not by itself. Hormone clearance and ovulation timing vary, but a new pregnancy and incomplete recovery may need to be excluded when the delay extends beyond your care plan.
Should I take a pregnancy test?
Use a test according to your follow-up instructions, and tell the care team if it remains positive or becomes positive again after a negative result.
