How soon dengue can occur after a mosquito bite

Dengue occurs only when the biting mosquito carries dengue virus. During the incubation period, the virus is present but the person generally has no symptoms. Symptomatic dengue may then present with fever, a strong headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle aches, joint pain, nausea, rash or chills. The bite itself may go unnoticed, and its skin reaction cannot show whether the mosquito carried dengue.

Counting days can help a clinician interpret an exposure, but it cannot identify which particular bite caused an illness. Location, recent travel, local dengue activity, symptom onset and examination all contribute to the assessment.

If you become unwell after time in a dengue area, contact a clinician and give the places and dates of travel, the first day of symptoms and any known mosquito exposure. Drink regularly, rest and monitor how often you urinate. Use paracetamol only as directed if it is suitable for you. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen and similar anti-inflammatory medicines unless a clinician has excluded dengue, as these medicines can make bleeding more likely.

Prevent further bites while sick by using repellent, screens, long clothing and a mosquito net when appropriate. This reduces the chance that another mosquito acquires the virus and carries it onward.

Go for urgent medical assessment if there is severe belly pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the gums or nose, blood in vomit or stool, rapid breathing, pronounced tiredness, agitation, cold or clammy skin, or much less urine. These changes can appear when the fever is coming down and should not be dismissed as routine recovery.

Call emergency services for collapse, confusion, severe breathing trouble or inability to wake normally. People who are pregnant, very young, older or living with significant health conditions benefit from early advice because their monitoring plan may need adjustment.

Find out whether the exposure area and timing make dengue testing appropriate, what type of test fits the current stage, and how to judge adequate hydration. Ask which pain medicines are acceptable and whether follow-up blood counts are needed. If you care for a child or older adult, request specific instructions for tracking drinking, urination and alertness.
