When dengue symptoms appear after infection

The gap between infection and illness is called the incubation period. A person usually feels well during this interval. When dengue becomes symptomatic, it may present with sudden fever, headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle or joint aches, nausea, rash or chills. Some infected people have mild symptoms or none, so the calendar cannot establish a diagnosis.

A clinician considers recent travel or residence in an area where dengue is circulating, mosquito exposure, the symptom pattern and the stage of illness. Testing is chosen according to how long symptoms have been present because different tests are useful at different points.

Arrange medical advice if fever or a dengue-like illness follows possible exposure. Rest, take frequent fluids and watch urine output. Paracetamol may be suitable for fever or pain when used as directed, but avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen until dengue has been ruled out, because they can increase bleeding risk.

Record when the fever began, the highest measured temperature, fluid intake, urination and any new rash, bruising or bleeding. Continue mosquito-bite precautions while unwell so mosquitoes cannot pick up the virus and pass it to someone else.

Seek urgent assessment for severe or persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding from the nose or gums, blood in vomit or stool, marked drowsiness, unusual restlessness, pale or cold skin, breathing difficulty, or very little urine. Warning signs can emerge as fever starts to settle, so a lower temperature does not always mean the illness is resolving.

Emergency care is also appropriate for fainting, confusion or inability to drink. Pregnant people, young children, older adults and anyone with significant long-term illness should obtain clinical guidance early because monitoring and fluid needs may differ.

Ask whether your travel and symptom dates fit dengue, which test is appropriate now, what fluids and pain relief are suitable, and whether repeat blood tests are needed. Confirm which changes should send you directly to emergency care, particularly if the fever falls but abdominal pain, vomiting or bleeding develops.
