Short answer

Hair transplant aftercare focuses on keeping the scalp clean without friction, preventing pressure on grafts, using prescribed treatment, and following your clinic’s activity schedule.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Washing
Follow the clinic’s method and avoid rubbing or forceful rinsing.
Touching
Keep fingers and nails away from crusts and itchy grafts.
Activities
Return to exercise, swimming, grooming, and headwear on the treating team’s schedule.

Why the instructions are specific

Newly placed grafts need time to settle while tiny skin openings heal. The donor area is also recovering, even though it may be covered by surrounding hair. Care instructions therefore address two sites that can feel and look different.

Crusting, itching, tightness, mild tenderness, and limited swelling may occur. Picking at flakes can injure the surface and introduce germs. Scratching should be avoided even when the itch is distracting; ask the clinic which soothing measures are suitable.

A gentle daily routine

Wash only according to the clinic’s schedule. Apply any recommended cleanser with light contact, rinse gently, and let the scalp dry without rubbing. Keep hands clean before touching nearby skin, and do not pull away attached crusts.

Use the advised sleeping position and clean pillow covering. Avoid bending or exertion if it worsens throbbing or swelling. Before resuming workouts, swimming, steam rooms, hair colouring, clippers, or helmets, obtain a clear go-ahead from the treating team.

Take prescribed pain relief, antibiotics, or other medicines only as labelled. Do not add scalp oils, home remedies, styling products, or supplements without checking whether they could irritate the sites or interfere with treatment.

Signs that need medical advice

Call the clinic for pain that is becoming stronger, redness spreading beyond the treated area, increasing warmth, pus, unpleasant odour, fever, bleeding that does not stop with the instructed measure, or swelling that is worsening rather than settling.

Get urgent medical help for trouble breathing, swelling of the lips or throat, faintness, or a widespread blistering reaction after medicine. If a blow or scrape affects the grafts, tell the clinic what happened and send a clear photograph if requested.

Clarify your personal plan

Confirm the first wash method, how long each prescribed product is used, which headwear is acceptable, and the dates for activity and grooming changes. Ask who to contact if swelling, bleeding, or a medication problem develops when the clinic is closed.

Questions people ask

How should I sleep after a hair transplant?

Use the position and pillow arrangement advised by your clinic, particularly while swelling is present. Keep bedding clean and avoid letting the grafted area rub against fabric.

Should I remove the crusts myself?

Do not pick or scrape them. Gentle washing on the clinic’s schedule allows crusts to loosen without unnecessary traction on healing skin.

What can I put on an itchy scalp?

Use only products approved by the transplant team. They can suggest a suitable wash, spray, or medicine after checking whether the itch is part of healing or irritation.
