After frozen embryo transfer: a day-by-day guide

The embryo may continue developing and, if implantation occurs, attach within the uterine lining. The exact sequence depends partly on the embryo's developmental stage at transfer. Cramping, spotting, bloating or no symptoms at all can occur, but none of these experiences confirms whether implantation has happened.

On transfer day, mild pelvic discomfort or a small amount of spotting may follow the procedure. Over the next few days, a transferred blastocyst may begin attaching to the uterine lining; an earlier-stage embryo needs more time to develop first. Later in the waiting period, pregnancy hormone may begin rising if implantation has occurred, although it may still be too early for a reliable home test.

Breast tenderness, fatigue, discharge and bloating can come from progesterone or other fertility medicines. A quiet, symptom-free wait can also be entirely compatible with either outcome, so daily body changes should not be used as a pregnancy test.

Take progesterone and every prescribed medicine at the scheduled dose unless your fertility team changes the plan. Do not stop treatment because of spotting or an early home-test result. Gentle movement and usual daily tasks are generally reasonable, while strenuous exercise, overheating and any clinic-specific restrictions should be discussed with your team.

Use the pregnancy test on the date your clinic provides. Testing too early can give a negative result before enough pregnancy hormone is present, and medication used in some treatment plans can complicate interpretation. Keep hydrated, eat normally and arrange prescription refills before supplies run low.

Contact your fertility clinic promptly for bleeding heavier than light spotting, worsening pelvic pain, persistent vomiting, fever, marked abdominal swelling or reduced urination. Seek urgent medical help for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, fainting, shoulder-tip pain, chest pain or difficulty breathing. These warning signs need assessment regardless of a home pregnancy-test result.

Confirm the developmental stage of the transferred embryo, the date and type of pregnancy test, and exactly how long each medicine should continue. Ask whom to contact outside clinic hours, what level of exercise is suitable for you, and what to do if a dose is late, vomited or missed.
