What to Know After an Elbow Dislocation

Short answer
After an elbow dislocation, protect the reduced joint, control swelling, and begin clinician-guided movement to limit stiffness without sacrificing stability.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Early priority
- Protect alignment while checking hand circulation and nerve function.
- Movement
- Timing is individualized because both instability and stiffness matter.
- Splint care
- Keep it dry and seek review if it becomes tight, loose, broken, or damaging to skin.
The short answer
A sling or splint may be used at first. Follow the planned review because associated fractures, ligament injury, and nerve or blood-vessel problems can affect treatment even after the joint has been put back in place.
Healing after the joint is reduced
Closed reduction restores the joint alignment without an open operation. Swelling, bruising, aching, and restricted motion are expected early consequences of the injury, but alignment alone does not show whether every supporting structure is intact.
The elbow becomes stiff readily when held still. Clinicians balance protection of healing ligaments or fractures with appropriately timed motion. Follow-up examination or imaging may check alignment, stability, bone injury, hand circulation, and nerve function.
Look after the arm safely
Keep the splint or sling positioned as instructed and do not attempt to straighten, twist, or relocate the elbow yourself. Elevate the arm when practical, move permitted fingers regularly, and use a wrapped cold pack if your treating team recommends it.
Take prescribed medicines correctly and keep dressings or splint material dry. Remove rings if swelling is developing and they can slide off easily; do not force a trapped ring over swollen tissue. Attend physiotherapy when advised and perform only the exercises taught for your stage of healing.
When to get urgent help
Seek urgent assessment if the hand becomes cold, pale, blue, increasingly swollen, numb, or weak, or if pain escalates despite medication and elevation. A splint that feels progressively tight also needs prompt review.
Emergency care is needed for a new deformity, an open wound near the joint, heavy bleeding, or loss of feeling or movement in the hand. Contact the treating service as well for fever, wet or damaged splint material, skin sores, or worsening rather than settling symptoms.
Questions for the next appointment
Ask whether a fracture or ligament injury was found, how long protection is needed, which movements are currently safe, and when therapy should start. Confirm the plan for follow-up imaging, work, driving, sport, and any limits on lifting or leaning through the arm.

Questions people ask
Why are finger movements encouraged?
Permitted finger movement can support circulation and reduce hand stiffness while the elbow remains protected. Stop and seek advice if it provokes marked pain or new numbness.
Can I remove my sling or splint to sleep?
Follow the treating team's specific instructions. Removal too early may expose an unstable elbow, while unnecessary immobilization can add stiffness.
Will I need physiotherapy?
Many patients receive guided exercises to restore motion and strength. The starting point depends on joint stability and whether fractures or ligament injuries are present.
