After egg retrieval: planning a frozen embryo transfer

There is no single interval that suits everyone. The schedule depends on recovery after stimulation, the reason embryos were frozen, menstrual timing, and whether lining preparation follows natural ovulation or uses prescribed hormones.

After retrieval, the laboratory assesses embryo development and freezes embryos considered suitable for future use. Your ovaries and hormone levels can then settle before a separate transfer cycle begins. The clinic may arrange an ultrasound or blood tests to time preparation of the uterine lining.

In a natural-cycle plan, monitoring identifies ovulation. In a medicated plan, oestrogen may build the lining and progesterone helps coordinate it with the embryo's developmental stage. Your clinic will give a precise, individual calendar.

Use the recovery instructions supplied after retrieval and attend planned monitoring. Record the first day of bleeding if the team asks you to, and check before starting supplements or medicines that were not included in your plan.

Once transfer-cycle medication begins, take every dose at the stated time. If a dose is late, missed, vomited, or difficult to use, contact the clinic for specific advice rather than doubling it. Confirm the transfer date and pregnancy-test date separately.

Call the fertility team promptly if abdominal pain or bloating is worsening, you cannot keep fluids down, you develop fever or heavy bleeding, or urine output falls noticeably after retrieval. Difficulty breathing, chest pain, fainting, coughing blood, or severe pain low on one side warrants emergency assessment.

These warnings relate to recovery from ovarian stimulation and retrieval; waiting for a frozen transfer does not make them safe to ignore.

Ask why frozen transfer is recommended, whether your cycle will be natural or medicated, how ovulation and lining thickness will be checked, and what could change the planned date. Request written instructions for missed progesterone and an after-hours contact for urgent concerns.
