After-effects of cellulitis: recovery and recurrence

Short answer
After cellulitis, swelling, tenderness, discolouration, and skin sensitivity may linger, but worsening or returning symptoms need prompt reassessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Recovery clue
- Symptoms should trend toward improvement.
- Recurrence signs
- New warmth, spreading redness, pain, or fever.
- Skin protection
- Treat cracks, wounds, and fungal skin problems early.
The short answer
Recovery is not always immediate when antibiotics finish. The direction of change matters: warmth, redness, pain, fever, or swelling that returns or spreads can indicate active infection and should be reviewed quickly.
Changes during recovery
Cellulitis inflames the deeper skin and nearby tissues. As infection settles, the area may remain puffy, tender, itchy, dry, or darker than the surrounding skin. Peeling can occur as the surface recovers. These features should gradually trend in the right direction rather than becoming hotter, more painful, or more extensive.
Some people develop ongoing limb swelling because inflammation has affected fluid drainage. Repeated episodes can further strain that drainage system. Cracks between the toes, athlete's foot, eczema, wounds, and persistent swelling can create entry points or conditions that make another episode easier to develop.
Supporting recovery and prevention
Finish prescribed antibiotics exactly as directed unless the prescriber changes the plan. Rest and elevate an affected limb if advised, keep the skin clean, and use an unperfumed moisturiser on intact dry skin. Do not squeeze, puncture, or aggressively massage a recovering area.
Check the skin regularly for cuts, blisters, fungal changes, or cracks and address them early. Wear well-fitting footwear, avoid walking barefoot where injury is likely, and follow a clinician’s plan for chronic swelling. If you have diabetes, keeping foot checks and glucose care on track can reduce unnoticed skin damage. Compression should be started or resumed only with professional guidance during recovery.
Signs the infection may be returning
Obtain same-day medical advice for new or spreading skin redness, increasing warmth, swelling, painful skin, pus, red streaks, fever, chills, or feeling suddenly unwell. Cellulitis commonly presents with painful, warm, swollen, red skin, but a clinician must distinguish recurrence from inflammation left behind after treatment.
Call emergency services for confusion, severe breathlessness, faintness, mottled or unusually cold skin, very rapid breathing, or difficulty staying awake. These are red flags for severe illness, including sepsis, and urgency is based on the symptoms themselves.
Preparing for follow-up
Ask whether the remaining colour, tenderness, or swelling fits expected recovery; whether a wound, fungal infection, or swelling disorder needs treatment; and when normal activity or compression can resume. If episodes recur, ask for a prevention plan and clear instructions on which early changes require same-day contact.

Questions people ask
Can skin stay darker after cellulitis?
Yes. Inflammation can leave temporary or longer-lasting colour change. It should be assessed if it comes with renewed heat, pain, swelling, or spread.
Why is my leg still swollen after treatment?
Inflammation and disrupted fluid drainage can leave swelling after infection settles. Persistent, worsening, or one-sided swelling needs clinical assessment to confirm the cause and guide management.
How can another episode be avoided?
Protect the skin barrier, treat foot fungus and cracks, care for swelling as advised, and seek help early for new infection signs.
