After dengue fever: recovery and warning signs

Short answer
After dengue fever, recovery should centre on fluids, gradual activity, monitoring, and prompt action for warning signs.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Recovery focus
- Fluids, food as tolerated, rest, and gradual activity
- Medicine caution
- Avoid aspirin or ibuprofen unless specifically approved
- Urgent change
- Bleeding, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, or breathing difficulty
The short answer
Tiredness, reduced appetite, weakness, headache, and muscle or joint aches can linger as the body recovers. Symptoms should trend in the right direction rather than becoming suddenly more severe.
What the recovery phase can feel like
The end of fever does not always mean the illness has fully settled. A person may feel drained even after temperature returns to normal, and stamina can return more slowly than appetite or sleep.
New abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, marked drowsiness, restlessness, breathing difficulty, cold clammy skin, or much less urine are not routine recovery features. Dengue can present with these warning signs as fever subsides, so they need urgent evaluation.
How to look after yourself
Sip water and oral rehydration fluids regularly, especially if appetite remains low. Urine becoming very dark or infrequent can signal inadequate intake. Choose small, familiar meals and increase portions according to comfort.
Return to work and exercise in stages; pushing through pronounced fatigue may set back daily function. Use paracetamol only as directed for pain or fever. Avoid aspirin and anti-inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen unless a clinician specifically approves them, because dengue can increase bleeding concerns.
Get help if the course changes
Seek emergency assessment for severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, vomiting blood, black stools, bleeding that will not stop, fainting, confusion, breathing difficulty, extreme weakness, or very little urine. Do not wait for fever to return before acting.
Contact a clinician if fever returns, recovery stalls, bruising or bleeding appears, drinking is difficult, or fatigue prevents basic self-care. Follow any arranged blood tests or examinations even if you feel somewhat better.
What to clarify at follow-up
Discuss whether repeat blood tests are needed, which pain medicines are suitable, how much activity is reasonable, and what change should trigger reassessment. Mention any bleeding, reduced urination, dizziness on standing, or medicine and supplement use.

Questions people ask
Is tiredness normal after dengue fever?
Fatigue can persist after the fever ends and should gradually ease. A sudden decline, fainting, confusion, breathing trouble, or inability to manage basic care needs assessment.
Can dengue symptoms worsen after the fever settles?
Yes. Dengue can develop warning signs around the time fever falls. Severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, drowsiness, restlessness, or reduced urine require urgent care.
When can I exercise again?
Restart only when daily activities feel manageable and increase effort gradually. Delay strenuous exercise if you remain dizzy, weak, poorly hydrated, or have any bleeding.
