What happens after a miscarriage?

The experience differs according to the pregnancy stage and whether the miscarriage completed naturally or was managed with medicine or a procedure. Your team should explain what bleeding to expect and how completion will be checked.

Cramping can accompany passage of pregnancy tissue, followed by lighter bleeding or spotting. Breast tenderness, nausea and other pregnancy sensations may fade as hormone levels decrease. A pregnancy test can remain positive during this transition, so use the testing schedule your clinician provides.

Grief may bring sadness, numbness, anger, guilt, poor sleep or changing feelings from one day to the next. These reactions do not show that you caused the loss. Partners and family members may grieve differently, and counselling or bereavement support can be requested.

Use pads while bleeding so the amount is easier to observe, take recommended pain relief, drink fluids and reduce activity when cramps or fatigue increase. Follow your clinician's advice about sex, tampons, swimming and returning to exercise.

Keep any arranged scan, blood test or home-test follow-up. If tissue remains, choices may include waiting, medication or surgical removal; the suitable option depends on symptoms, examination findings and your preferences. Ask about your blood group and whether any treatment related to it is needed.

Seek prompt medical assessment for bleeding that soaks pads rapidly or keeps increasing, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fever, offensive discharge, persistent vomiting, dizziness, fainting or feeling markedly unwell. Sudden one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, collapse, breathing difficulty or uncontrolled bleeding requires emergency care because urgent causes must be excluded.

Ask how completion will be confirmed, what your test result should do over time, and which symptoms should trigger the emergency route rather than routine contact. You may also want to discuss when periods and ovulation may return, contraception, trying for pregnancy again, and where to find emotional support.
