What to expect after a frozen embryo transfer

Mild pelvic cramping, light spotting or bloating can occur, but symptoms alone cannot show whether implantation has happened. Take the pregnancy test on the date your fertility team provides, even if you feel no different.

The transferred embryo may attach to the lining of the uterus during the days after the procedure. Progesterone and other prescribed medicines support the uterine lining; their effects can resemble early pregnancy symptoms, including breast tenderness, tiredness and discharge. Having these sensations, or having none, does not predict the test result.

A small amount of spotting may come from the cervix after the transfer or occur later. Do not stop medication because of spotting unless your fertility team specifically tells you to do so.

Use every medicine at the prescribed dose and time, and contact the clinic if a dose is missed, vomited or difficult to take. Avoid starting medicines, supplements or herbal products without checking whether they are suitable during this stage of treatment.

Normal gentle daily movement is generally reasonable; prolonged bed rest does not hold an embryo in place. Follow your clinic’s individual advice about strenuous exercise, sex, bathing, work and travel, because recommendations may reflect your treatment history and current symptoms. Keep hydrated, eat normally and avoid testing earlier than advised, as an early result may be unclear.

Contact your fertility clinic promptly for bleeding that becomes heavy, worsening pelvic pain, persistent vomiting, fever, increasing abdominal swelling, reduced urination or any symptom that worries you. The clinic can advise whether you need examination, blood tests or an ultrasound.

Seek urgent medical care for severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, marked dizziness, chest pain or difficulty breathing. These symptoms need assessment regardless of a home pregnancy test result.

Confirm exactly when and how to take each medicine, what to do after a missed dose, and the date and type of pregnancy test. You can also ask which activities your clinic restricts, who to contact outside opening hours, and what the next appointment will involve if the result is positive, negative or uncertain.
