Freckles on African skin

They are usually a cosmetic feature, but a spot that behaves differently from the others should be examined rather than assumed to be a freckle.

Typical freckles, also called ephelides, are flat and often appear as multiple small tan-to-brown spots on areas that receive sunlight. Their colour may become more noticeable after sun exposure and soften when exposure decreases. On deeper skin tones, freckles can be less visually obvious, and other causes of pigment such as healed inflammation may look similar. A clinician can distinguish them from moles, sun-related spots and other pigment changes by examining their pattern and surface.

Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to exposed skin, seek shade during intense sun, and use a hat or protective clothing. These habits help limit darkening and new sun-related pigment. Freckles do not require removal. If their appearance bothers you, a dermatologist can discuss topical care or procedures. IPL and picosecond lasers target pigment differently, but darker skin can also absorb treatment energy, so device choice, conservative settings, practitioner experience and a test spot are important parts of planning.

Have a spot checked promptly if it grows, develops an irregular outline, contains several colours, becomes raised, repeatedly crusts or bleeds, or does not heal. New symptoms such as persistent itching or pain also warrant review. These signs do not establish a diagnosis, but they make direct examination safer than treating the area as ordinary pigmentation.
