Advil for body aches

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that reduces pain, inflammation, and fever. It can improve comfort from a short-lived viral illness, muscle strain, or other inflammatory pain, but it does not treat the infection or underlying disorder causing the aches. Influenza, COVID-19, dengue fever, malaria, brucellosis, thyroid disease, fibromyalgia, and other conditions can all present with muscle or body aches; accompanying symptoms and exposure history guide assessment.

Ibuprofen may be unsuitable with a stomach ulcer or previous digestive bleeding, kidney disease, severe heart failure, an allergy or asthma reaction to anti-inflammatory medicines, dehydration, certain pregnancy stages, or use of medicines that increase bleeding or kidney risk. Dengue is an important concern because ibuprofen can add to bleeding risk.

Rest, drink enough fluid unless you have been told to restrict it, and check your temperature and other symptoms. Before using Advil, read the label, confirm that no other pain, cold, or flu product contains ibuprofen, and ask a pharmacist if your medical history or medicines create doubt. When suitable, take only the labelled dose for the shortest necessary period.

Do not combine ibuprofen with naproxen, aspirin for pain, or another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory. Paracetamol may be a possible alternative for some people, although liver disease, alcohol use, and duplicate ingredients require consideration. If dengue could explain fever and aches, avoid ibuprofen and obtain clinical advice.

Seek emergency care for difficulty breathing, confusion, collapse, a stiff neck with severe headache, new weakness, chest pain, very dark urine with profound muscle pain, vomiting blood, or black stools. Arrange prompt medical review when fever is accompanied by a spreading rash, unusual bruising or bleeding, persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, reduced urination, dehydration, recent travel to an area with mosquito-borne illness, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling.

Tell the clinician when the aches began, where they are felt, and whether fever, weakness, rash, joint swelling, respiratory symptoms, stomach symptoms, a new medicine, heavy exercise, insect bites, animal exposure, or recent travel occurred. Ask whether testing is needed and which pain reliever is appropriate while the cause is being assessed.
