Advil and acid reflux

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. It reduces protective substances in the stomach lining, which can lead to indigestion, burning discomfort, inflammation, an ulcer, or bleeding. This irritation is separate from reflux, where stomach contents travel upward into the oesophagus, but the sensations can overlap and ibuprofen may make upper digestive symptoms more noticeable.

Risk is greater with larger or repeated doses, previous ulcer or bleeding, older age, heavy alcohol use, kidney disease, or medicines such as anticoagulants, antiplatelet drugs, steroids, and some antidepressants. Taking ibuprofen with food may reduce stomach upset but does not remove the risk of an ulcer or bleeding.

Check the active ingredients of pain, cold, and flu products so that ibuprofen or another anti-inflammatory is not taken twice. If a clinician or pharmacist says ibuprofen is suitable, use the lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary time and follow the label. Avoid combining it with naproxen, aspirin used for pain, or another non-steroidal anti-inflammatory unless specifically directed.

Paracetamol may be an option for some types of pain and is less likely to irritate the stomach, but it is not suitable for everyone and must not be duplicated across combination products. Frequent pain or repeated need for medication deserves review. Discuss an alternative or stomach-protecting treatment rather than adding an acid remedy without checking interactions.

Stop ibuprofen and seek urgent care for vomiting blood or dark material resembling coffee grounds, black sticky stools, severe or worsening abdominal pain, faintness, marked weakness, or breathing difficulty and facial swelling. Chest pain, pressure, or tightness needs emergency assessment when it is new, severe, persistent, triggered by exertion, or accompanied by breathlessness, sweating, nausea, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder; do not assume it is reflux.

Ask whether ibuprofen is appropriate given your reflux pattern, ulcer history, kidney health, blood pressure, pregnancy status, and other medicines. Confirm which pain reliever fits the cause of pain, how long it should be used, and whether persistent heartburn, swallowing difficulty, chronic cough, or night symptoms require evaluation.
