Advanced IPL hair removal explained

IPL is not a laser: it delivers a range of light wavelengths. Filters, pulse settings and cooling can be adjusted, but safe selection depends on the contrast between hair pigment and skin pigment, recent sun exposure and the treatment area.

Hair pigment absorbs light and converts it to heat, which can impair a follicle during an active growth phase. Because follicles are not all active together, treatment is normally planned as a course with possible maintenance.

Dark, coarse hair commonly offers a clearer target than very light, grey or red hair. Melanin in the surrounding skin also absorbs light, so poorly chosen settings can cause burns or pigment changes. A suitable device and experienced operator matter especially for deeper skin tones.

Tell the practitioner about tanning, photosensitising medicines, active rashes, cold sores, scarring tendencies and previous reactions to light treatments. Avoid removing hair from the root before sessions when instructed; trimming or shaving preserves the follicle target.

After treatment, use gentle products, sun protection and the recommended cooling measures. Do not pick irritated follicles. Mild warmth or redness may settle, but the plan should be adjusted if reactions are stronger or last longer than your clinician expected.

Seek prompt assessment for blistering, severe or increasing pain, marked swelling, grey or white skin, an open wound, or signs of infection such as spreading redness or pus. Protect the area and do not apply another active product unless a clinician advises it.

Arrange a medical review if excess hair appears suddenly, progresses quickly or occurs with scalp thinning, acne or menstrual changes. Hair growth linked to an underlying hormonal condition may need assessment alongside cosmetic reduction.

Ask whether IPL is suitable for your skin tone and hair colour, what cooling and eye protection are used, whether a test area is advised, who will operate the device, and how settings are changed after a reaction. Clarify whether a true laser would offer a more appropriate wavelength for your skin.
