Advanced ECG machines: what patients should know

These features can help clinicians capture and organise information, but the machine's interpretation is not a diagnosis by itself. A healthcare professional considers the tracing alongside symptoms, examination, medical history and earlier ECGs.

Small electrodes placed on the skin detect electrical activity as it travels through the heart. The resulting tracing shows heart rate, rhythm and the timing of conduction through different parts of the heart. Certain patterns may support concern about an abnormal rhythm, conduction disturbance, strain or reduced blood supply, but several findings are non-specific.

Advanced can refer to digital filters, high-resolution displays, automatic interval calculations, comparison with previous tracings, remote transfer or software alerts. Portable recorders may collect signals during ordinary activities when a brief resting ECG does not capture intermittent symptoms.

Tell the clinician why the ECG was requested and describe palpitations, chest discomfort, breathlessness, blackouts or dizziness, including what you were doing when they began. Share your medicine list because some drugs can affect heart rate or electrical intervals.

For a resting recording, wear clothing that allows access to the chest, wrists and ankles. Creams or oils can prevent electrodes from sticking, and chest hair may occasionally need small areas trimmed. Remain still and breathe normally while the trace is collected. The electrodes sense signals; they do not send electricity into the body.

Call emergency services for chest pressure or pain that is severe, persistent or accompanied by sweating, nausea, breathlessness or collapse. Sudden fainting, severe breathing difficulty, new weakness on one side, or a sustained racing heartbeat with marked dizziness also warrants emergency assessment. Do not delay care while trying to obtain or interpret a personal ECG recording.

Seek timely clinical review for recurring palpitations, unexplained near-fainting or symptoms triggered by exertion, even if a smartwatch or previous ECG appeared normal. Intermittent rhythm problems may not occur during a short test.

Ask whether the tracing quality was adequate, whether the rhythm and measured intervals need follow-up, and how the result fits your symptoms. If episodes come and go, ask whether longer monitoring, an exercise test, blood tests or heart imaging would answer a different clinical question.
