Adult freckles: recognition, sun care and treatment choices

They often become more noticeable after ultraviolet exposure and may fade when exposure decreases. Daily broad-spectrum sun protection can limit darkening and reduce additional sun damage. Cosmetic procedures can lighten selected freckles, yet pigment can return with further exposure.

Freckles, also called ephelides, are small flat areas where skin makes more melanin without an increased number of pigment-producing cells. They commonly occur on the face, shoulders, arms and other sun-exposed sites. Their colour may shift with the season, especially in people whose skin freckles easily.

Not every brown mark in adulthood is a freckle. Sun spots tend to persist rather than fade, while moles have different cellular features. A dermatologist can use close visual examination and a dermatoscope when the identity of a spot is unclear.

Use broad-spectrum sunscreen on exposed skin, reapply according to the label and add shade, a hat and protective clothing. In the UAE, incidental exposure through routine travel and outdoor errands can add up, so protection is useful beyond beach days. Do not use bleaching mixtures of uncertain ingredients.

If freckles are cosmetically bothersome, a dermatologist can confirm the diagnosis before discussing light or laser treatment. IPL photofacial and picosecond laser treatment may target pigment in selected skin types, but both can cause irritation or unwanted colour change. Careful device settings, pre-treatment assessment and sun avoidance after treatment matter.

Arrange an assessment for a mark that is new and unlike your others, changing in size, shape or colour, developing an irregular edge, or showing several colours. Bleeding, crusting, persistent itching, tenderness or a sore that does not heal are additional reasons to seek care.

These features do not identify the diagnosis by themselves, but they should not be covered with cosmetic treatment before examination. Seek a timely review if you have many atypical moles, a previous skin cancer or substantial cumulative sun exposure.

Ask whether each target is truly a freckle, how your natural skin tone affects the risk of pigment change, and what sun-care routine is needed around a procedure. Clarify the expected degree of lightening, likely downtime and what to do if the treated area blisters or darkens.
