Adrenaline injection for anaphylaxis

Prompt treatment matters because anaphylaxis can quickly narrow the airways and disrupt circulation. The injection begins emergency care; it does not replace ambulance assessment and monitoring.

Adrenaline acts on the heart, blood vessels and airways. It helps raise dangerously low blood pressure, reduce swelling and ease tightened airway muscles. A racing heartbeat, trembling, anxiety, headache or paleness can occur after an injection. These effects are assessed in context, but concern about them should not delay prescribed adrenaline when severe allergic symptoms indicate anaphylaxis.

Features needing immediate action include swelling of the tongue or throat, hoarse or noisy breathing, wheezing, severe breathing difficulty, faintness, confusion or collapse. Anaphylaxis may include skin or digestive symptoms, although a rash does not have to be present.

Call UAE emergency services immediately and say that adrenaline has been given for suspected anaphylaxis. Keep the person flat with the legs raised unless breathing is difficult, in which case a supported sitting position may help. Place an unconscious but breathing person on their side. Avoid letting the person stand, walk or change position suddenly.

Write down the injection time and keep the used device for the ambulance crew. If serious symptoms persist or return, a further dose may be directed by the person’s allergy action plan or the emergency call handler when another prescribed device is available. Do not substitute antihistamines or an asthma reliever for adrenaline; those medicines do not address all the dangerous effects of anaphylaxis.

Every suspected anaphylactic reaction warrants emergency evaluation, even when the person seems better after injection. Symptoms can fail to settle fully or return, and clinicians may need to support breathing or circulation and observe the response to treatment.

If normal breathing stops, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation if you are able and use a defibrillator if one is available, following its voice prompts. Stay with the person and follow instructions from emergency services until responders take over.

After recovery, discuss the likely trigger, whether allergy testing is appropriate and how to reduce future exposure. Review the prescribed injection device, storage requirements and signs that should activate the emergency plan. Ask how many devices to keep available and arrange replacements for any that were used or expired. People who may assist you should know both the device location and the action plan.
