How ADHD testing works

Questionnaires can organise information, but their scores are interpreted alongside a detailed interview. A clinician may also request observations or records that show how difficulties appeared earlier in life and in different settings.

The discussion usually covers attention, organisation, restlessness, impulsivity, education or work, relationships, driving, self-care, sleep, mood, substance use, physical health, and current medicines. With permission, a parent, partner, teacher, or another person may describe what they have observed.

There is no routine blood test or brain scan that confirms ADHD. Physical examination or laboratory checks may be used when the history suggests another cause, such as a sleep disorder, thyroid problem, medicine effect, anxiety, or depression.

Collect school reports, previous clinical letters, a medicines list, and examples of current problems if they are available. Think about when each difficulty started, how often it occurs, where it causes harm, and what systems you use to compensate.

Answer questionnaires based on your usual experience rather than a particularly good or difficult day. Explain any hearing, language, reading, cultural, or accessibility needs before the appointment so the assessment method can be adapted appropriately.

Request an assessment when persistent attention or impulse-control difficulties interfere with ordinary responsibilities. Do not wait for an ADHD appointment if there are plans to self-harm, immediate danger, hallucinations, extreme agitation, or sudden confusion; use local emergency care for those symptoms.

Ask who will perform the evaluation, what documents or informants would help, how competing explanations are checked, when findings will be discussed, and what support is available whether or not ADHD is diagnosed.
