ADHD and learning disabilities: what to know

ADHD can affect attention, impulse control, organisation and working memory. A specific learning disability involves persistent difficulty developing a particular academic skill, such as reading, written expression or mathematics, despite appropriate teaching.

In class or at work, both may look like unfinished tasks, missed instructions or slow progress. The reason matters: someone with ADHD may understand the material but lose track of steps, while a learning disability can make one type of information unusually hard to decode or use.

One can also hide the other. Strong coping strategies may conceal an academic weakness, while repeated attention lapses may make it difficult to see whether a skill-specific problem remains. Anxiety, poor sleep, hearing or vision problems and gaps in teaching can add similar difficulties and should be considered.

Record which tasks are difficult, where they happen and what improves them. Bring school reports, examples of written work, workplace feedback and any previous assessments to a clinician or educational specialist. A broad evaluation may examine attention, development, academic skills, language, mood, sleep, hearing and vision rather than relying on one score.

Support can be matched to the actual barrier. Options may include explicit skills teaching, shorter instructions, visual reminders, extra planning time, a quieter workspace and treatment for ADHD when clinically appropriate. Accommodations help access learning; they do not replace targeted instruction for a specific learning disability.

Arrange an assessment when difficulties persist across terms, cause marked distress, interfere with daily responsibilities or continue despite suitable teaching and practical support. Seek prompt help if frustration is accompanied by severe anxiety, withdrawal from usual activities, unsafe behaviour or thoughts of self-harm. Immediate danger requires local emergency services.

Ask which explanations fit the pattern, whether a psychoeducational or mental health assessment is appropriate, and which school or workplace adjustments could be tried now. Also ask how progress will be measured and when the plan should be reconsidered.
