Adenocarcinoma of the lung: what to know

It begins in gland-forming cells in the lung. A biopsy confirms the diagnosis, while imaging and laboratory analysis help the care team choose among surgery, medicines, radiotherapy, or a combination.

The pathology report identifies adenocarcinoma by the appearance and behaviour of sampled cells. Staging describes where the cancer is located and whether it has reached lymph nodes or distant organs. Molecular testing may find changes in the tumour that make a targeted medicine relevant; other tumour markers can help guide immunotherapy decisions.

A cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort, coughing blood, fatigue, or a hoarse voice can occur with lung cancer, but these symptoms also have non-cancer causes. Their persistence and severity determine how quickly they should be assessed.

Ask for the exact pathology, stage, and results of biomarker testing. If disease is confined to an operable area, removal of a lung section may be considered. Radiotherapy can treat a defined site, while chemotherapy, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy may treat cancer cells throughout the body.

Report breathing symptoms, pain, appetite changes, sleep problems, and treatment effects at each visit. Supportive and palliative care can be used alongside cancer treatment to ease symptoms and help with daily function; it is not limited to the end of life.

Get urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, chest pain, coughing up more than a small streak of blood, fainting, new confusion, a seizure, or sudden weakness on one side. Fever during systemic cancer treatment also needs prompt advice from the oncology team because infection can become serious quickly.
