Adductor Tendinopathy

Short answer
Adductor tendinopathy is persistent groin pain linked to an overloaded inner-thigh tendon and is commonly managed with progressive rehabilitation.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical site
- Upper inner thigh near the groin
- Common trigger
- Repeated loading beyond current tendon capacity
- Core treatment
- Graded strength and activity progression
The short answer
Management balances a temporary reduction in irritating activity with exercises that rebuild the tendon's capacity. Complete rest may calm symptoms but does not prepare the tendon for running, kicking or rapid direction changes. Progress is guided by the response during exercise and later that day or the next morning.
How the condition behaves
The adductor tendons attach inner-thigh muscles near the pubic bone. Tendinopathy can develop when repeated loading exceeds what the tendon currently tolerates, particularly after a jump in training, kicking volume or cutting work. Adductor tendinopathy often presents with local groin tenderness and pain during resisted adduction, running or changing direction.
Groin symptoms can also arise from the hip joint, abdominal wall or other nearby structures. A clinician therefore considers the pain pattern, training history, strength and movement rather than relying on the label alone.
What supports improvement
Begin by adjusting the activities that cause a clear flare while preserving tolerable fitness. Rehabilitation may start with static adductor work and progress to heavier resisted movements, hip and trunk control, then faster running and lateral tasks. Mild discomfort can sometimes be acceptable, but sharp or steadily escalating pain signals that the dose needs changing.
Sleep, recovery between demanding sessions and gradual training changes matter alongside exercises. Shockwave therapy or an injection may be discussed in selected persistent cases, but neither replaces a structured loading programme or a careful diagnostic review.
When an assessment is needed
Book an evaluation if groin pain keeps returning, affects walking or sleep, or prevents progression despite sensible load changes. Seek urgent help for sudden severe pain, inability to bear weight, a new groin bulge, fever, testicular pain, numbness or pain accompanied by abdominal symptoms. These features are not typical of a straightforward overload problem and should be checked promptly.
Useful questions for your clinician
Discuss what findings support tendon involvement, which competing causes have been considered, and how your weekly activity should change. Ask for measurable progression markers, a response rule for exercise discomfort and criteria for resuming high-speed or multidirectional activity.

Questions people ask
Is adductor tendinopathy the same as a pulled groin?
Not exactly. Tendinopathy usually reflects a longer-running load problem, while a strain is an acute muscle or muscle-tendon injury, although their symptoms can overlap.
Should I stop all exercise?
Usually, activity is modified rather than eliminated. Keep movements that remain tolerable and reduce the specific loads that cause a clear, lasting symptom increase.
Can massage cure the tendon?
Massage may temporarily ease surrounding muscle tension, but rebuilding tendon capacity generally requires progressive loading and management of aggravating activity.
