Short answer

Adductor pain during pregnancy can come from muscular or pelvic loading, but new groin pain deserves attention to accompanying pregnancy symptoms.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical area
Inner thigh, groin, or near the pubic bone
Movement strategy
Use shorter steps and avoid painful wide leg movements
Medication safety
Confirm suitability with a pregnancy-aware clinician or pharmacist

What inner-thigh pain may represent

The adductors help control the legs and pelvis during walking, turning in bed, stairs, and getting into a car. Changes in posture, gait, activity, and pelvic loading can make the inner thigh or its attachment near the pubic bone sensitive.

Features that help locate the source

Muscular pain may be tender along the inner thigh and aggravated by squeezing the knees together or taking a wide step. Pain centred at the front of the pelvis may also involve the pelvic girdle, while deep groin pain with restricted hip movement can have a hip-joint source.

Groin discomfort by itself does not establish the cause. Your maternity clinician can consider pregnancy-related symptoms, and a physiotherapist familiar with pregnancy can assess gait, hip movement, muscle function, and day-to-day triggers.

Ways to move more comfortably

Shorten your stride, slow direction changes, sit down to dress, and keep the knees closer together when rolling in bed or entering a car if wide leg movements hurt. Break demanding tasks into smaller periods rather than pushing through an increasing limp.

Gentle strengthening or support strategies should be tailored to your pregnancy and symptoms. Before taking pain medicine, check with a maternity clinician or pharmacist who knows you are pregnant, including for products available without a prescription.

When to contact maternity or emergency care

Contact your maternity service promptly for pain with vaginal bleeding, fluid leakage, regular tightening, fever, faintness, pain when urinating, reduced fetal movement when you would normally expect movement, or any symptom your maternity team has told you to report. Seek emergency help for breathlessness, chest pain, or one-sided calf swelling, warmth, and pain.

A fall, inability to bear weight, sudden severe pain, marked swelling, or new numbness also warrants urgent assessment rather than exercise or massage.

Questions for your care team

Ask whether the pattern fits muscle or pelvic-girdle pain, which movements to modify, whether a pregnancy-trained physiotherapist would help, and which pain-relief options are suitable for your stage of pregnancy and medical history.

Questions people ask

Can I exercise with adductor pain during pregnancy?

Often activity can be modified rather than stopped, provided you have no maternity warning signs and your gait remains comfortable. A clinician can adapt exercises to your pregnancy, pain pattern, and current ability.

Is massage suitable for inner-thigh pain in pregnancy?

Gentle treatment may be considered after the cause and pregnancy context are checked. Avoid deep pressure over a swollen, hot, bruised, or acutely painful area, and do not use massage in place of urgent assessment for warning signs.
