Adductor magnus strain symptoms: what to notice

Short answer
An adductor magnus strain can cause inner-thigh or groin pain, tenderness, weakness and pain when squeezing the legs together.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What symptoms can an adductor magnus strain cause?
Symptoms may begin suddenly during sprinting, kicking, changing direction or slipping, or build after repeated loading. Walking with a long stride, climbing stairs and pushing the leg inward against resistance can aggravate the area. Bruising or swelling can occur with a more substantial injury.
How the symptom pattern helps
The adductor magnus runs along the inner thigh and helps pull the leg inward while also assisting hip movement. Pain may therefore sit high near the groin, farther down the inner thigh or toward the back of the thigh. Location alone cannot confirm which tissue is injured.
A clinician may compare tenderness, hip movement, strength and walking. This matters because hip-joint problems, tendon irritation and other groin injuries can produce overlapping discomfort. The examination can guide whether imaging is useful rather than treating every painful groin as the same problem.
What to do after symptoms begin
Pause the movement that triggered sharp pain and reduce activities that worsen your limp. Comfortable, gentle hip and knee movement is preferable to repeatedly testing a painful stretch. A wrapped cold pack may help short-term soreness; keep fabric between it and the skin.
As pain settles, rehabilitation usually progresses from controlled muscle contractions to strengthening, running and direction changes. Increase difficulty only when the current task does not cause sharp pain or a clear flare afterward. A physiotherapist can tailor loading to your daily needs and sport.
When to seek medical care
Arrange an assessment if you cannot walk normally, pain is worsening, marked bruising or swelling develops, or symptoms are not improving with activity modification. Seek urgent care after a major injury if you cannot bear weight, the leg looks deformed, or it becomes numb, cold or unusually pale.
Urgent assessment is also appropriate for severe groin pain with abdominal or testicular pain, fever, or feeling acutely unwell. These features need evaluation for problems beyond a muscle strain.
Questions to take to your appointment
Ask which structure seems injured, whether your walking and strength suggest a larger tear, and what movements are safe now. If you play sport, ask which strength, running and change-of-direction checks should be comfortable before full training.

Questions people ask
Can an adductor magnus strain cause bruising?
Yes. Bruising and swelling can accompany a more substantial muscle injury, although their absence does not rule out a strain.
Does inner-thigh pain confirm an adductor magnus strain?
No. Several muscles, tendons and hip or groin problems can produce pain in this area, so an examination is needed if the diagnosis is uncertain.
Should I stretch a painful adductor immediately?
Avoid forcing a painful stretch early on. Use comfortable movement and introduce mobility and loading gradually as sharp pain settles.
