Adacel vaccine and whooping cough

How the structures involved in Whooping Cough differ from normal

Short answer

Adacel is a booster vaccine that helps protect against whooping cough, tetanus and diphtheria.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Vaccine type
Combination booster against pertussis, tetanus and diphtheria
Common after-effect
Temporary soreness where the injection was given
Key precaution
Report any previous severe vaccine reaction before the dose

The short answer

It contains inactivated components and cannot cause whooping cough. Protection can lessen over time, so a clinician recommends the dose according to age, previous vaccinations, pregnancy, exposure risk and local immunisation guidance.

How the vaccine helps

The vaccine trains the immune system to recognise bacteria that cause pertussis, also called whooping cough, along with tetanus and diphtheria. Vaccination reduces the chance of serious illness but does not rule out infection, so a persistent or severe cough still deserves assessment.

A sore arm, redness, tiredness, headache or a mild fever may follow the injection. These reactions generally settle without special treatment. A clinician should check your vaccine history because Adacel is a booster rather than a substitute for an incomplete primary vaccination course.

Before and after vaccination

Tell the vaccinator about previous severe allergic reactions, a serious reaction after a pertussis-containing vaccine, current illness, pregnancy, medicines that suppress immunity and any bleeding disorder. Bring your vaccination record if available.

After the injection, keep the arm moving gently and use a cool compress for local discomfort. Ask which pain or fever medicine is suitable for you rather than taking an unfamiliar product. If you have been close to someone with confirmed whooping cough, vaccination does not replace advice about testing, monitoring or preventive antibiotics.

When to seek care

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, collapse or marked weakness after vaccination. Contact a clinician promptly if fever is high or persistent, symptoms are worsening, or the injection site becomes increasingly painful, hot or swollen.

A cough with breathing pauses, blue or grey lips, severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion or difficulty waking needs urgent assessment. Babies with coughing bouts or feeding difficulty should be assessed promptly because their condition can deteriorate quickly.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether this is the appropriate booster for your vaccination history, whether pregnancy changes the timing, and what to do after a known pertussis exposure. You can also confirm which expected reactions can be managed at home and which symptoms require a call.

Questions people ask

Can Adacel give me whooping cough?

No. It uses inactivated components that prompt an immune response and cannot cause pertussis infection.

Do I still need care if I develop a severe cough after vaccination?

Yes. Vaccination does not exclude infection or another cause of cough; breathing difficulty, colour change or coughing fits need prompt assessment.

What if I have recently been exposed to whooping cough?

Contact a clinician. Your vaccination history, symptoms and type of contact help determine whether testing, monitoring or antibiotic treatment is appropriate.
