Acute poliomyelitis: what patients and families should know

How the structures involved in Poliomyelitis differ from normal

Short answer

Acute poliomyelitis is a contagious viral illness that can injure nerves controlling muscles and breathing, requiring urgent specialist care.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Cause
Poliovirus
Main route
Contact with infected stool through contaminated hands, food, water, or surfaces
Prevention
Vaccination and careful hand hygiene

The short answer

There is no medicine that removes poliovirus after infection. Care focuses on breathing and swallowing support, pain control, hydration, preventing complications, and rehabilitation when weakness occurs.

How the illness develops

Poliovirus spreads mainly through contact with infected stool, often by contaminated hands, food, water, or surfaces. Many infections cause no clear illness or only a fever, sore throat, tiredness, headache, nausea, or muscle aches. A small proportion progress to inflammation around the brain and spinal cord or weakness caused by motor-nerve damage.

When paralytic poliomyelitis occurs, weakness often appears suddenly and may be uneven between limbs. Reflexes can be reduced while sensation remains intact. Weakness of breathing or swallowing muscles is especially dangerous and may worsen rapidly.

Actions after possible exposure or illness

Contact medical services immediately if polio is suspected, and mention recent travel, contact with a suspected case, and vaccination history before attending. This allows the care team to arrange suitable infection precautions and testing. Do not prepare food for others, and wash hands carefully with soap and water after toileting or changing nappies.

Follow public-health instructions about isolation, testing, and contacts. People with weakness may need respiratory monitoring, safe-swallow assessment, physiotherapy, positioning, and mobility support. Vaccination prevents disease but does not treat weakness that has already developed.

Neurological and breathing emergencies

Call emergency services for sudden limb weakness, difficulty breathing, weak coughing, choking, trouble swallowing, a changed voice, inability to sit or stand normally, or rapidly worsening muscle weakness. These symptoms require urgent monitoring and supportive treatment.

Prompt assessment is also needed for severe headache with neck stiffness, unusual drowsiness, or repeated vomiting after possible exposure. Keep the person away from shared settings while arranging care, but do not delay emergency transport to attempt home isolation.

Questions for the care team

Ask which tests are planned, how breathing and swallowing will be monitored, and what precautions household members must follow. Families can also ask whether close contacts need vaccination review and what rehabilitation support may be required after discharge.

Questions people ask

Can poliomyelitis be treated with antibiotics?

No. Antibiotics do not act on poliovirus. Hospital care supports breathing, swallowing, comfort, mobility, and recovery while complications are managed.

Does every poliovirus infection cause paralysis?

No. Many infections cause no symptoms or a mild illness. Poliomyelitis can, however, present with sudden flaccid weakness, which is a medical emergency.

Why does vaccination history matter after exposure?

It helps clinicians and public-health teams assess protection and decide whether vaccination needs updating for the person or close contacts.
